Protective Hairstyles to Keep your Hair Healthy in Winter

Personally, I love winter! I love the fashion, I love the idea of snuggling on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate and I love the long winter nights. But winter can be a challenging time us with 4c hair. It's basically a concoction  of bad elements which usually leaves our hair in quite a poor state. The cold weather can leave your hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. However, with the right hair care routine and protective styles, you can keep your hair healthy and moisturised throughout the winter season. In this blog post, we talk about the moisture retention issues 4c hair faces during winter and some of the best protective styles to keep your 4c hair healthy this season.
What are the best protective hairstyles?
When it comes to protective styles for 4c hair in winter, there are several options to choose from. Some of the most popular styles are box braids, cornrows, and twists. If you're looking for a more low-maintenance style, then a wig or weave may be the way to go. Wigs and weaves provide a great way to protect your hair from the cold weather while also giving you the flexibility to change up your style whenever you want. Just be sure to choose a high-quality wig or weave that won't damage your hair or scalp.
These protective styles provide a great way to protect your hair from the cold weather and prevent breakage, as they help cut down the manipulation of your hair that usually comes with everyday combing/styling. These styles also tuck your strands and ends safely, protecting them from the harsh wind and cold air.
My hair is in a protective style, now what?
You shouldn't put your hair in a protective style and completely forget about it. Even though protective styles will help your hair retain more moisture than if you just let it out, your hair will eventually dry out. You need to maintain a minimal hair care routine, such as applying a lightweight moisturiser to your scalp every couple of days. I know that not everyone is a fan of washing braids in winter, because they take forever to dry, but I still like to wash my hair at least once every three weeks just to get rid of the product buildup that usually collects at the root of the braid. It also helps to keep my scalp clean so that when I do apply products your hair shaft is clean and open to absorb nutrients.
If washing your braids sounds too dreadful, then try steam therapy. You can do this yourself, or with a friend, by pouring hot water into a bucket or basin, and just hovering your head above the steam. Be careful not to burn yourself. Steam is basically airborne water which means it is light enought to penetrate and hydrate your strands while also opening your hair shaft. Or you can just take a warm shower and ditch the shower cap (not too long in the shower though - water crisis).

In most cases leave in products leave a white residue and product build-up. But the LULA scalp moituriser was not made using wax as a thickener, an alternative rheology modifier was used. The scalp moisturuser is a creamy gel that is fast penetrating the scalp and hair leaving no residue, and because it has a gel consistency it is light does not feel heavy on the hair.
If you want something for on-the-go, then the hydrating spray is your bestie. Just sprits-sprits every other day or so and because the key ingredients are so light they will penetrate your roots and strands quite easily. The hydrating spray contains ingredients that create a barrier to prevent moisture from leaving the scalp and hair follicles.
